Dilemma

It's hard to plan your life when you don't know if you're going to get pregnant right away or not for a few years. Example - how do you plan to travel? We've planned our big Australian getaway in just two days, before we even started trying to get pregnant, but what happens after we get back? We have promised a friend a visit to his new house in CT for the fourth of July. We've been planning to go together to an optional work trip I have to Denver in August. We always get together with our college friends for Labor Day - this year we are planning to go back to college for a mini-reunion (mini because it's just us and not in any way sanctioned by the school). We have a family reunion with my family in TN for Thanksgiving.

So what if I'm pregnant? We really should be saving our money and vacation time. And I get really motion sick, with pregnancy that will get much worse. But what if I'm not pregnant? We can't just sit at home for the next couple of years waiting to get pregnant. And we should get the travel out now before the kids are born, because then it will only be harder.

For the most part we've decided to put this decision making off until we get back from Australia. This is how we are handling most of our life right now - everything can wait until after we get back. However, we need to make a decision about my work trip to Denver. If I want to go, I need to fill out the form before I leave for vacation. I have the form. It's been sitting on my desk for over a week. Tomorrow is my last day at work and I don't know if I will submit the form or not.

In my experience, if you don't take these trips, you'll regret it. If you're pregnant, it's okay! If you have to cancel, you can, or if you have to skip a cycle because you're travelling, that's okay too. Don't put the rest of your life on hold for TTC though. It's so important to keep living.

And as for travelling now before kids--sure it's a little more difficult to travel with kids, but people do it all the time, and the kids get so much out of it. Yes, you may have to wait a few years, but travelling is not out of the picture once you're parents. Someone had to remind me of that a couple of years ago, and now J and I fantasize about taking our kids all over the world.

I think this is sooo hard....I get especially hung up on making those small trips, like visiting with college friends for long weekends. I do think that it is okay to skip cycles or change plans if necessary. And I try to tell everyone that I might back out at the last minute.

Bigger trips are definitely okay to skip cycles for, so I don't get too hung up on those. We are planning to go to Alaska in August!

Alaska is certainly one of our dream vacations.

Hi! I just found your blog through QueerStork.
We travel alot too and have had quite a hard time of it, but so far haven't had to miss anything.
Anytime something family has come up and it looks like it might be around ovulation time we have simply explained to them that we will do our best to be there but this comes first.
That doesn't help with business trips.

For the bigger trips, I would take them unless you are just feeling like Every Month Counts and it would make you more stressed out to miss a cycle than to take a vacation.

Go!
